TUKWILA, WA (April 17, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell for the first time this season as Seattle Sounders FC 2 were able to get their first win of the season by a final score of 1-0.
A very physical first half led to a few scoring opportunities by both sides. Miguel Gonzalez, Josh Suggs, Mike Seth, and Marty Maybin all had scoring opportunities but the Switchbacks weren’t able to capitalize. Seattle nearly took the lead in the 10th minute, but a fully extended Devala Gorrick was able to keep the ball out of the net. Unfortunately for the Switchbacks, Seattle earned a penalty kick in the 28th minute where Aaron Kovar was able to convert from 12 yards into the bottom left corner to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. Switchbacks FC Captain Luke Vercollone nearly found his first goal of the season in the 43rd minute but the shot was saved by a diving Miller preventing the equalizer. The Switchbacks outshot Seattle 10-7 but only 4 of their shots were on target.
The second half continued to be as physical as the first. The Switchbacks continued to apply pressure in the attacking third but each time were met by a stingy Seattle backline and a goalkeeper who stood his ground to find the clean sheet. Seattle also continued to apply pressure but Switchbacks goalkeeper Devala Gorrick did his part by keeping it a 1-0 game.
“They got a penalty, it’s not the way you want to lose a game.” Gorrick said, “My guys helped me out in the back to keep it a 1-0 nothing game and it’s unfortunate the way it ended.”
Unfortunately the late attempts by the Switchbacks weren’t enough and the final result was a 1-0 for the Switchbacks; their first loss of the 2016 campaign.
“We were a little behind the pace,” assistant coach Wolde Harris said, “We have to see what we did wrong and work hard in practice to be ready for San Antonio.”
The Switchbacks will return home for a two game home-stand at Switchbacks Stadium on Saturday, April 23rd as they take on new USL side San Antonio FC for Family Day and then on Saturday, April 30th as they take on Real Monarchs SLC.
