Phoenix, AZ (July 15, 2017) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC fell 1-2 to Phoenix Rising FC on the road.
After a tough 4 points from their three-game homestand, the Switchbacks were looking to earn three points on the road against Phoenix Rising FC. The Switchbacks got off to a strong start at the backline stood firm against legendary forward Didier Drogba despite a 62%-38% possession disadvantage. In the 12th-minute, Josh Phillips played a long ball into Kevaughn Frater who beat Cohen to the bottom right to grab his 5th of the season. The teams would continue to battle with Phoenix Rising's best chance coming just after the hydration break in the 36th-minute where Sean McFarlane had to come up with a slide tackle on Bravo to help keep Phoenix scoreless at the break.
Phoenix made one change at halftime as they brought on JJ Johnson who would prove to be the difference maker in the match. Johnson would grab his first in the 66th-minute as he came in and kicked the ball away from Pouaty. The teams would battle back and forth before taking their second hydration break of the match. Johnson would get his second of the match in the 83rd-minute as Drogba's corner ended with Johnson heading the ball to Pouaty's left. Despite eight minutes of stoppage time, from injury time and hydration breaks, the Switchbacks weren't able to find an equalizer. The loss was the Switchbacks first loss to the Arizona side, having won the previous five meetings.
The Switchbacks will now travel to Oklahoma City to face Energy FC on July 22nd. The Switchbacks will return home on July 29th at 7:00 PM for 90s Night.
