Seattle, WA (July 10, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC 2 after playing a man down in the final 20 minutes of the match.
Wanting to bounce back from their draw in Portland, the Switchbacks wanted to get momentum going early. In his first start, goalkeeper Billy Thompson would come up with a huge save in the 5th minute to keep the Switchbacks level. The Switchbacks would find their breakthrough in the 28th minute as a long throw found Luke Vercollone who found Mike Seth who fired a rocket into the bottom right corner to put the Switchbacks up 0-1. The Switchbacks would continue to control the game and take the lead into halftime.
Unfortunately the Switchbacks would not continue their form in the second half. Seattle would make a few adjustment as the second half began and was able to find an equalizer in the 60th minute. Things would take a turn for the worse as new defender, Joe Greenspan, would be sent off in the 70th minute after receiving a second yellow card. Seattle would then make the best of the extra man in the 86th minute. The Switchbacks would continue to fight until the final whistle for an equalizer but unfortunately came up short.
“Right now we are struggling, and the only way to light a fire under them is to change players,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “We have to reassess everyone and see who is willing to step up and fight.”
“We’re very disappointed in the result,” said Captain Luke Vercollone. “We are at a tough spot right now and need to dig deep as a group to see if we can pull out of this low point in the season.”
The Switchbacks will return home on July 12th for the first ever International Friendly at Switchbacks Stadium as they take on German Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05.
The Switchbacks will return home for USL action on July 16 at 7:00 PM for Cancer Awareness Night and post match fireworks.
