Edinburg, TX (August 27, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 2-1 to Rio Grande Valley FC Toros behind two Ruben Luna penalty kicks.
The two sides picked back up where they left off on Sunday. Playing in 91 degree heat, the Switchbacks showed signs of struggling early. Rio Grande Valley controlled possession for the majority of the first half. However, shortly after a brief water break in the 32nd minute, the Switchbacks would take the lead. Josh Suggs would break down the left side and fire a shot into the bottom right to score his second of the season and give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Unfortunately the lead wouldn’t last long as Devala was called for a foul in the box to give Rio Grande Valley a penalty kick. Ruben Luna would convert from 12 yards out in the 42nd minute after having to retake the penalty kick after the official called encroachment on the first one. The sides would head into the break locked at 1-1.
The Switchbacks woes continued in the second half. Christian Ibeagha was shown a yellow card in the 56th minute which put his at 5 on the season suspending him for the next match. Rio Grande were able to take the lead in the 64th minute as a second penalty was awarded to Ruben Luna who picked the right side again, beating a left-diving Devala Gorrick. Things would continue to get chippy as Josh Phillips was shown his second yellow card just seven minutes after his first, earning a red card an a suspension from the next match as well. Miguel Gonzalez would then be shown a second yellow, just 4 minutes later, also earning a suspension for the next match. The Switchbacks would finish the match with 9 players and picked up 2 suspended players for the next match: , Josh Phillips (2 Yellow/Red), and Miguel Gonzalez (2 Yellow/Red). Rony Argueta and Christian Ibeagha also joined Marty Maybin, and Devala Gorrick as players 1 yellow card away from yellow card accumulation suspensions.
“All I can say is players from both teams battled hard,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh after the loss. The Switchbacks have four remaining matches before the regular season ends.
The Switchbacks will return home on September 3rd to face LA Galaxy II for Superhero Night and a post-match Independence Day Sized fireworks show.
