Colorado Springs, CO (July 12, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 0-6 in their first ever International Friendly to 1. FSV Mainz 05 of the German Bundesliga.
In their first ever international friendly, the Switchbacks had a tough task playing the German side. Despite a strong effort from Switchbacks goalkeeper Devala Gorrick. Mainz 05 were able to go up 0-3 at halftime after goals from Pablo de Blasis, Gerrit Holtmann, and Christian Clemens. The Switchback’s best opportunity came in the 20th minute as Shintaro Harada put a free kick from about 22 yards out.
The second half wouldn’t be much different for the Switchbacks. The pure power and class of the German side proved to be to great for the Switchbacks to overcome. Mainz 05 was able to put up another 3 goals on the Switchbacks to take the result 0-6.
Tonight’s match did prove to be a good test for the Switchbacks however. With an unlimited allotment of substitutions, the Switchbacks were able to give a number of players some significant playing time. Taewoo Kim, Jake Cawsey, Kevin Durr, Shintaro Harada, and Billy Thompson were all able to get at least 45 minutes of playing time. As Head Coach Steve Trittschuh tries to find an answer to the team’s recent slide, tonight’s match could prove valuable as the Switchbacks return to USL action on Saturday night in a crucial match with Sacramento Republic.
“You have to keep tonight’s game in perspective,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “They’re one of the tougher Bundesliga teams, technically they’re a lot better than us. I know we had some tire legs out there from this past weekends match, but now we’ve just gotta get ready for Saturday.”
The Switchbacks will return home for USL action on July 16 at 7:00 PM for Cancer Awareness Night and post match fireworks.
