Peoria, AZ (June 1st, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC advanced to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating fellow USL side Arizona United 3-0.
With Wolde Harris at the reins, and a change from their typical USL lineup, the Switchbacks proved that their depth was a key asset in their Open Cup match. The Switchbacks and Arizona would battle back and forth early on with each team earning a few opportunities early on. A critical save by Billy Thompson was made in the 38th minute that would keep the match scoreless for the moment. It wouldn’t be long before captain Luke Vercollone would finish the rebounded shot to give the Switchbacks a 1-0 lead which they would take into halftime.
“It was a great result tonight,” said Captain Luke Vercollone. “Everyone bought into the game plan, and we executed it and get to move on to the next round.”
The Switchbacks would continue to apply pressure early on in the second half as Aaron King was able to clean up the 1-on-1 attempt by Saeed Robinson to find his first goal of 2016. The Switchbacks would hold the 2-0 lead until Mike Seth was able to find Luke Vercollone who was able to finish on the first time attempt to put the final nail in the coffin on a Switchbacks 3-0 win over Arizona United.
“We came up with a good game plan and the guys stuck to it,” said Assistant Coach Wolde Harris. “I’m very proud of the way the guys overcame the conditions tonight, with the high heat and humidity, but they were able to fight and push through it and get a great result tonight.”
The Switchbacks will play their 4th round U.S. Open Cup match on June 14th vs the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. This will be a rematch of the 2015 U.S. Open Cup which saw the Rapids take a 4-1 result in Denver.
