Colorado Springs, CO (May 13, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC defeated Portland Timbers FC 2 1-0 in the United Soccer League Game of the Week, which was featured on ESPN 3.
The two sides played a fairly scrappy game in the first half with neither team able to capitalize on their opportunities. Portland applied pressure early in the second half but a strong performance by the Switchbacks backline and goalkeeper Devala Gorrick held Timbers 2 scoreless and took a 0-0 draw into halftime.
The Switchbacks came out hot to start the second half. A few early second half opportunities nearly led to the Switchbacks taking the lead. The Switchbacks finally earned a dangerous free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Josh Suggs was able to find Christian Ibeagha, but Kendall McIntosh was able to come up with a tremendous save to deny Ibeagha his first goal of the 2016 campaign. Fortunately, Mike Seth was right there to clean up the shot and headed it home for his 3rd of the season to put the Switchbacks up 1-0 in the 52nd minute.
“We worked really hard in the first half.” Said Seth, “The hard work in practice really paid off and we were able to score and take home a win.”
The second half truly lived up to the USL Game of the Week hype as both teams continued to apply pressure. Saeed Robinson, coming on as a sub, provided the fresh energy for SFC that he had shown in his last two matches. He was nearly able to provide a scoring opportunity halfway through the second half but Portland was able to clear it away. Portland continued to apply pressure in the second half, but goalkeeper Devala Gorrick, along with his backline, was able to come away with a clean sheet and 1-0 victory in the USL Game of the Week.
“It wasn’t our best performance, but we will take the 3 points.” Said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “We need a little more quality in the final third to break teams down, but I am really happy with another shutout.”
The Switchbacks will travel to Arizona next weekend to take on Arizona United SC in an early season rematch at Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday, May 21st at 8:30 MDT. The match can be seen live on the USL YouTube page.
