Colorado Springs, CO (August 21, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks defeated Oklahoma City Energy FC 2-0 in the USL Game of the Week featured on ESPN3.
After a disappointing result on Sunday, the Switchbacks were looking to bounce back against rival Oklahoma City Energy FC. The teams battled back and forth in the early going, with both teams having their fair share of opportunities. The Switchbacks began to gain momentum midway through the half before they found their breakthrough. It would be Miguel Gonzalez who would cut through the Energy FC defense and fire off a beautiful curling ball into the top corner to give the Switchbacks the 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. Josh Suggs would come up with a huge block in the box toward the end of the half to keep the lead for the Switchbacks. The Switchbacks would hold on to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
“I’m always excited to be out here at home and get those three points,” said Miguel Gonzalez. “You know, that makes me happy providing something for the win.”
The Switchbacks would continue to to cause havoc in the Energy FC defensive third throughout the 2nd half. Devala Gorrick would come up with four critical saves in the 2nd half on his way to a Switchback’s record 10 shutouts in a season besting his 2015 record of 9 clean sheets. The Switchbacks would make a couple of well executive substitutions as Marty Maybin and Mike Seth helped the Switchbacks double the lead in stoppage time. Mike Seth got into the box and found Marty Maybin who slotted his second goal against Oklahoma City this season and his team-leading 7th of the season. The Switchbacks would hold on to the 2-0 lead to sweep the series against Oklahoma City. The Switchbacks two goals marked the first time the team had scored two or more goals since their 2-0 win over St. Louis onJune 4th in Colorado Springs.
“It was a great team effort,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “Defensively we were very good tonight. We need to keep the momentum going into Rio Grande. We’re back on top with 40 points and we need to look for 43 points on Saturday.”
The Switchbacks are now tied for first place in the Western Conference with 40 points.
The Switchbacks will return home on September 3rd to face LA Galaxy II for Superhero Night and a post-match Independence Day Sized fireworks show.
