Colorado Springs, CO (August 21, 2016) – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fell 0-2 to the surging Rio Grande Valley FC Toros Sunday afternoon after going down to 10 men in the first half.
Coming off a 10 day break, the Switchbacks were looking for another win to keep them atop the Western Conference. The Switchbacks faced an uphill battle early on as Ruben Luna put the Toros on the board in the 6th minute slotting a ball into the bottom left corner. The Switchbacks were nearly able to find an equalizer in the 15th minute but the header by the header was cleared off the goal line. Shortly after that, Rio Grande Valley had to replace their starting keeper as Irving had to come out with a possible concussion. Tensions began to rise as the match went on and it became a little chippy. Unfortunately, Rony Argueta would be the victim of a red card following a challenge on Jorghino James, who minutes earlier was carded for a foul on Argueta. The card came about 2 minutes into first half stoppage time and left the Switchbacks down a man for the remainder of the match.
The Switchbacks would have a handful of opportunities in the 2nd half but weren’t able to finish any of their chances. Rio Grande Valley was able to double their lead in stoppage time and hand the Switchbacks only their second loss at home this season.
“We need to look who came out of today healthy and see who’s ready to step up,” said head coach Steve Trittschuh. “It’s going to be a battle with OKC and we need to be ready for it.”
The Switchbacks will return home on August 24th to face Oklahoma City Energy FC at 7:00 PM. The match will be shown live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app as the USL Game of the Week.
